This four-year program is one of only 17 nationwide NKBA-endorsed, providing students with resources and competitions as well as dedicated teachers that help prepare them for success in the field.

The Charrette gives teams of interior design, construction management and building science students an opportunity to collaborate on solving an issue within 48 hours. These challenges often have humanitarian or local significance.

Design charrette

This program equips students with the knowledge and expertise required to enter the design-build profession, from training in codes-based commercial environments, design theory, and the design process to internships, service learning opportunities, studio classes and field trips. Furthermore, online and live lecture courses are offered. In addition, bachelor degrees can be earned in Contract, Hospitality Lighting Residential specialty fields. According to College Factual this school ranks #104 on their Best Schools for Interior Design list while placing #2 among Utah schools.

The Design Charrette is an engaging project-based learning opportunity that gives students hands-on experience working collaboratively in teams to solve real design problems. This technique, known as problem-solving in the design-build industry, encourages creative solutions within an agreed timeline. Each year Interior Design students collaborate with Building Design & Construction majors and Construction Management students from the College of Engineering, Applied Science & Technology to address an international or local design-build project challenge ranging from humanitarian efforts to design build.

becca Ayon, Jessica Smith and Brittani Weber earned honorable mentions in the Midwest Region portion of IDEC Student competition. Furthermore, Jen Burke, Lydia Travis and Kaitlyn Jones won top 10 status at 2020 Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Collegiate competition, which featured jurors made up of design-build professionals as finalists.

Interior Design students at Utah Valley are active members of IIDA Mid-America chapter and take part in community engagement projects as part of their capstone design courses (IDT 4025/4030) and via an annual interdisciplinary design charrette. For instance, students have volunteered their services by distributing food packs to elementary school children as part of Catholic Community Services of Northern Utah’s Bridging the Gap initiative.

The center also provides support to the Global Leadership Institute, providing undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to volunteer in remote communities around the globe. For instance, 16 students from College of Human Ecology along with two CCEL advisors traveled to Peru in 2014 where they assisted with building water systems as well as renovating Rayitas de Sol daycare, an effort which was covered in The New York Times story about this effort.

Service learning

Service learning experiences provide students with practical design experience and hands-on work, while simultaneously developing interpersonal and teamwork skills essential in the industry. Students also explore different methods of creating and solving design problems using this method. It’s an integral component of Interior Design programs; students take part in many service learning activities throughout the year locally and globally – including service projects with community partners, guest speakers and field trips as part of this experience. Our curriculum integrates accreditation curriculum standards with practical experience and professional exposure for maximum professional growth.

This program equips students to enter the profession with knowledge of commercial environments governed by codes, design theory and specification of interior materials and finishes. It places special emphasis on human-centric designs that promote health, safety, welfare and accessibility for all occupants – and teaches students to recognize the impact their designs have on all people regardless of socioeconomic background or situation.

Students enrolled in WSU Interior Design programs must participate in a charitable chair project as part of their coursework. Chairs are auctioned at public events with proceeds going toward charity as well as WSU Interior Design program. Each chair is professionally photographed before being included on event’s website or brochure for auctioning.

Students enrolled in five interior design courses participate each semester by refurbishing an historic chair that holds special significance to them. Their proposal must detail a project management plan and secure as many sponsors as possible; additionally they must create a brochure which features both the chair’s history as well as their team before handing both in by semester’s end.

Service Learning at the university provides students with an excellent opportunity to engage with real-world projects while building their portfolios. Students have the support of faculty and staff members as they navigate their coursework; multiple resources exist such as the Registrar’s Solution Center which can answer any questions regarding academic deadlines or graduation requirements as well as assistance for housing, food or any other needs they might have.

Portfolio review

Portfolio reviews are an integral component of the program, consisting of work from interior design and art foundation courses that students must complete to graduate. They give students an opportunity to showcase their skills and creativity, with minimum 10 pages and cover/title pages required in their portfolio review submissions.

Weber State University Interior Design students learn to cultivate creativity, design theory, and advanced technical skills through internships, service learning opportunities, studio courses, field trips and study abroad experiences. Furthermore, their program features both live lecture courses as well as online coursework options.

WSU awarded 15 bachelor’s degrees to interior design program graduates during the 2020-2021 academic year – an increase from 12 bachelor’s degrees given out last year. Student chapter

WSU Interior Design students gain proficiency in studio experience, design theory and advanced technical skills through studio visits, internships, field trips and study abroad experiences. Every year, Interior Design students from five courses collaborate on a chair refurbishing project for charity. At an auction event held each year, these refurbished chairs are auctioned off and their proceeds go toward supporting both an established community partner and Interior Design Department.

Student chapter meetings are hosted weekly in IDT 2990 Design Seminar course and feature guest speakers; tours are regularly scheduled each fall/spring semester due to space limitations; members also enjoy an annual Business Luncheon where they have the chance to network with local design professionals.
